Stud Services

Bluegrass Alpaca Ranch offers two types of stud services: Drive-by breeding, and on-farm breeding. Both are described below.

Drive By Breedings: Bring your female alpaca(s) to Bluegrass Alpaca Ranch to mate with one of our herdsire males and then transport them back to your farm.

The advantages of drive-by breedings are:

    1. The female (and her cria) are at the breeding farm for 2 days maximum.
    2. The mating has the same benefits of hand or pen mating.
    3. The female (and her cria) endure less stress during critical conception time.
    4. There is a 20% Drive-By discount on the normal stud fee.

The requirements for a successful drive by breeding are:

    1. Females must be at the correct point in their follicular cycle, in other words she must be receptive to the male.
    2. A teaser male can be used to test the female's receptivity one day before the mobile mating. NOTE: Do not use a teaser male any sooner than 24 hours before the actual breeding because the female might ovulate and become non-receptive thereby wasting your time and travel.

The respective responsibilities of the drive by breeding parties are:

    1. Dam owner must complete the service agreement for drive-by breeding prior to arrival at Bluegrass Alpaca Ranch.
    2. Dam owner is also responsible for pregnancy confirmation. Matings with receptive females result in a confirmed pregnancy after one mating, 65 - 70% of the time. This success ratio is higher for females that have just birthed a cria and slightly lower for maiden females.
    3. Stud owner makes herdsire male available for repeat breedings if necessary, at no additional charge.
    4. Live birth guarantee.

  • On-Farm Breedings: The dam owner brings the female and her cria (if she has one) to Bluegrass Alpaca Ranch. The dam (and cria) will stay at the ranch for 60-90 days. This breeding service includes: 1) agistment up to 90 days, 2) routine herd health check-ups and ultrasounds.

The advantages of on-farm breedings are:

    1. The dam (and her cria) are monitored by farm cameras 24/7.
    2. The dam is hand bred, pen bred or can be released into the pasture with the male for natural breeding (under supervision).
    3. Bluegrass Alpacas is located near several local veterinarians that can perform ultrasounds to confirm the breeding.

The requirements for a successful farm breeding are:

    1. The female (and cria) must be examined by a licensed vet prior to departing from the owners farm. The test must certify that the animals are free of parasites, are BVD negative and are healthy enough to travel.
    2. Dams who must be re-bred must also be reproductively sound and able to rebreed.
    3. A teaser male can be used to test the female's receptivity prior to departure from the owners farm to see if she is going to be receptive.

The respective responsibilities of the on farm breeding parties are:

    1. Dam owner must complete the service agreement prior to arrival at Bluegrass Alpaca Ranch.
    2. Dam owner provides all health records for dam (and cria).
    3. Bluegrass Alpaca Ranch will agist the dam (and cria) along with the rest of the herd. Agsitment, routine herd health check-ups, vaccinations and ultrasounds are included free of charge.
    4. The stud owner makes a herdsire male available for repeat breedings if necessary, at no additional charge.
    5. Live birth guarantee.
