Meet the Guardian Llamas

Mister Bojangles (Freestate’s Bad to the Bone)

Mister Bojangles is an appaloosa llama with siri fiber (long, silky and straight, rather than fluffy and crimpy) with a big personality. His job at the farm is to guard the alpacas against any outside predators.

Likes: Being caught and/or handled by humans.
Dislikes: Competition from her fellow alpacas trying to be the farm greeter

Rocky Top (Freestate’s Hard to Get)

Likes: Rocky Top is also a guardian of the alpaca herd. He is more subdued than Bojangles but definitely entertains his desires to play. He is a large llama, the largest member of the male herd but he is a gentle giant. He has beautiful markings and is definitely one of our most photogenic animals on the farm!
Dislikes: When Bojangles won’t let him graze in the field and instead chases him and nips at his feet!
Type: Male Huacaya
Status: Unproven
Color: Grey-dilute/Cream (Off White)
Birthdate: 05/06/13
Heritage: Chilean
Registration: ILR Registered

Gabe

Gabe is the 400+ lb. cow-colored llama guardian of the female alpaca herd. He is such a gentle giant. When presented with a predatory challenge, Gabe will face it head on without fear (or so it seems). He will lead the entire female herd in a triangular formation. Gabe gets in the front and the females line up behind him with the crias protected in the middle. Together, they will rush the fence if needed to scare away whatever presents itself. We personally saw Gabe do this when a black bear climbed our 5ft. “no climb” fence in the middle of the night! Gabe is a wonderful guardian and a kind-hearted companion.

Likes: Laying in the sun on a particularly steep incline
Dislikes: When he has to share his grain with others
Type: Male Huacaya
Status: Gelded

Heritage: Unknown
Color: Black & White
