Spring 2016

Amy

We may as well have a bird sanctuary here at the farm. We generously fill our many bird feeders with seed, provide fiber (alpaca and Samoyed) for our birds to build comfy nests, and this year, we added several gorgeous birdhouses for them to roost in for as long as they would like. The birds are content here. They love us and we love them. We even welcome bats; which are amazing by the way, if you aren’t aware. At dusk, the bats swoop in and start devouring our mosquito population, which if you have ever met me (and seen my ridiculously scared skin from a lifetime of being pestered by every insect known to man), you’ll understand how very happy this makes me. We added a bat house for them too because they also help pollinate all of our pretty flowers in the butterfly garden!

This Spring as the weather started to warm up, our birds were happily singing around the farm and making themselves comfortable in every available spot. They roosted not only in their houses, but in my begonias, on top of our porch fans, in the run-in sheds and in the barn overhangs as well. I wish they would just use the couple of houses we provide for them but honestly, we make it so comfortable for them here, it’s no surprise they think they can just roost wherever!

Anyway, I started hearing chirps of little baby birds and was getting curious. I just love any sort of baby animal (who doesn’t?) so, I had to see them and snap a few pictures. I got my sturdy stepping ladder and climbed up to check out the nest the swallows had built. SQUEEE!!! The babies were sooooo very cute! They didn’t have their eyes open yet but they could hear. As I was squealing over their cuteness, they opened their mouths thinking I was their mommy coming to deliver some snacks! I couldn’t resist chirping back at them and every time I did, they would open their huge over-sized beaks! After a few rounds of that I realized I was being a jerk because I didn’t actually have any food for them so, I resisted the urge to do it again- thankfully I got a video! Check them out… Don’t you just love them?!
